State and local lawmakers are speaking out about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's decision not to list the Dunes Sagebrush Lizard as an endangered species.
"After visiting the Permian Basin the Administration no doubt saw firsthand the real, dire consequences that listing this species would have had for Texans and our nation's energy production," he said.
The oil and gas industry and state officials are applauding the move, which removes, for the moment, a potentially significant obstruction for the West Texas oil boom.
U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe made the announcement after the federal agency reviewed data about the lizard for more than a year.
