UPDATE: Mutt Strut Fundraiser Location for the Humane Society of Odessa Causes a Public Outcry

ODESSA -- The Mutt Strut is billed as a fundraiser to help the Humane Society of Odessa.
UPDATE: The location of the Mutt Strut has been changed to the Graham's Brothers Entertainment Offices down the street from Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The Humane Society released a statement today:

The board of the Humane society would like to thank Sunset Memorial for hosting this event and bringing  awareness of the importance of pets in our lives and the welfare of all animals.  We are working together to make this event special for all the Sponsors and attendees on Saturday, from 9am -12.    We are getting tents set up at the new site which is 6999 East Hwy 80,Grahams Brothers office, so we can have the pet parade for 3-12 years old and their pets, along with giving out micro-chips and shots for dogs & cats at a discount price.  The Mutt Strut will continue on the grounds of Graham Bothers office.
Thanks for the continued support from the community, as we are not affiliated with any national organizations, and rely soley on donations.

Sunset Memorial Gardens also released a statement:

When Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home began working with the Odessa Humane Society to try and find a way to bring awareness to the
growing problem of abandoned animals in our community, we envisioned an event where Sunset could be a good business citizen and the
Humane Society could raise funds to help protect animals in the Odessa area. Sunset offered to host the event and cover all of the
expenses so that all proceeds from the silent auction and the donations could go directly to the rescue and care for the animals.

However, due to the concerns of the several individuals and a couple of phone calls threatening our staff, Sunset will be moving the
Mutt Strut Fundraiser to another site so that we can continue to live up to our commitment to the Odessa Humane Society. Our good
neighbors at Graham Brothers Entertainment have agreed to allow the fundraiser to be held at their executive offices, 6959 E. Business
20, located less than a quarter of a mile east from Sunset.

We hope that this will not cause an inconvenience to our attendees, sponsors and vendors who also support this worthwhile cause.
Pleasee join us at the executive offices of Graham Brothers Entertainment, 6959 E. Business 20, for family and pet-friendly

But many people are unhappy about the event which is planned for this Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

"Wondering what they were thinking? Because that just seems one disrespectful and two, would somebody want their relative's grave you know, peed on?" the woman said.

This woman has family members buried at the this cemetery and choose not to be on camera.

According to officials at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, the original location of the Mutt Strut was in the far north of the cemetery.

Then organizers say they moved it to be on the cemetery's west side, completely outside of the cemetery itself. But the move is not appeasing everyone.

We asked how you felt about this on our Facebook page and received over a hundred responses.

Chelynne Harris says: "I can see where it's disrespectful because people put extra effort in keeping their family members areas very nice. I have family there as well and personally do not like the idea but, I really don't understand why anyone would think this was a good idea anyway?"

Edverna Mobley says: "I have a husband, in-laws, and grand parents buried at Sunset. I do not see anything wrong with this. The event is being held in front of the building, next to a large grass area. The pets are not allowed inside the cemetery itself. To me, it is safer than in a parking lot on a busy street since both animals and children are involved."

"I think that if they were gonna do something like this like the Mutt Strut, that it should have been done in like a park or somewhere that's dog friendly. That would have been much better," the woman said.

According to officials at Sunset Memorial, a final location for the Mutt Strut will be decided Friday morning at 10.
