But, a storm barreling across the country is packed with all these elements and wreaking havoc on holiday travel plans on the ground and in the air. Wall Street Journal travel columnist Scott McCartney offers tips for getting ahead of canceled flights.

"If you know that the weather is going to be bad in Charlotte, even though you're going from - say - Florida to California and the weather's fine in both places, you may be suffering big-time delays. the quicker you figure that out, call the airlines and see if you can reroute through a hub in Houston or Dallas or some place that is no longer affected by this storm," says travel columnist for Wall Street Journal, Scott McCartney.

Sleet and freezing rain is possible beginning Tuesday from the Southern Appalachians to parts of Northern New England. By midweek, the National Weather Service expects the storm to zero in on the northeast and that could spell more travel nightmares.
