Permian Basin Oilfield Goes Green

New company offers solar powered light towers
Permian Basin -- Drilling and frac jobs are 24 hour operations. So when the sun goes down, light towers go up. While light towers are most commonly known to run on diesel fuel, there's new technology in town that can help save operators money while also helping save the environment.

They are light towers powered by the sun, and they're an environmentally friendly way to light up the oilfields of the Permian Basin.

"You can use them on man camps, frac ponds, fracs, drilling rigs, pulling units, virtually anywhere in  the oilfield that needs a lighting unit  you can put these on," said Dalton White, Assisted Energy.
   
While the most commonly used diesel units pollute the air, solar units have zero emissions.

While helping the environment, operators will also be helping their wallets. Not only do you save on fuel costs, you also save on man hours. "We have timers programmed onto our units that turn them on and off for you," said White.
   
But the benefits don't end with the impact, or lack thereof, on Mother Nature. Compared to noisy diesel light towers, solar light towers have virtually no sound at all which can be a luxury for populated areas. "Populations like Gardendale where there are a lot of rigs around very close to homes... these are completely quite," added White.
   
Should you be worried about the sun not shining, an operator can go with another unit that incorporates wind power. But in West Texas, it shouldn't be a problem. "Even on overcast days, the unit still charges. Right now we're pulling in 232 watts," said White.
   
The solar powered units have been lighting up the Basin for about four months. In that time, White says they've been catching on fast. It's just one example of the industry working to do what they do best in an environmentally friendly way.
