ODESSA -- The city of Odessa is one step closer to using cameras to catch traffic violations.
Tuesday, the Odessa City Council passed an ordinance that would allow the use of traffic cameras. This ordinance is a state requirement before cities can actually begin installing the devices.
City officials haven't made a decision to install the cameras or not. But they do say, citations that stem from the cameras will be different.
"People need to understand that if in the future traffic safety cameras are implemented in the city of Odessa, it will be a civil penalty, not a criminal penalty," Andrea Goodsen, the Odessa Public Information Cordinator, said.
The ordinance passed with three council members voting in favor of it and two opposed.
