Noel Elementary Temporarily in "Shelter in Place"

ODESSA -- According to ECISD's Communication Director Mike Adkins, a lockdown is an emergency procedure that goes into effect when there's an immediate threat at the school.

A shelter in place is in effect when something is happening in the neighborhood near the school that has the potential to impact the the campus.

Adkins says different districts have different names for these types of situations that are not exactly lockdowns.

But he says ECISD uses the term "shelter in place" so each school knows what's going on and what needs to be done.

"So, what we do is, any kids that are outside, we bring them back inside. and then we'll monitor the front door, and see who's going in and out to make sure that nothing happens you know that nothing comes into the school. The situation is much less severe if we are doing a shelter in place," said Adkins.

Although no students at Noel Elementary were in danger today, the school must follow protocol to ensure the safety of the kids.

It's a procedure done as a precaution..like in the case at Noel Elementary today.

Adkins also tells us while the children are inside the school building during the "shelter in place", everything is going as scheduled for that day.

Nothing is changed or rescheduled for the students.

And school officials say the child carrying the plastic toy gun, is not a student at Noel Elementary.
