First Responder In Need of Donations After Traffic Accident

22-year-old Nick Barton, a first responder in Sweetwater, was traveling on his motorcycle and collided with a pickup truck.
SWEETWATER -- August 7th, 2013, a day the Barton family will never forget.

It's the day 22-year-old Nick Barton, a first responder in Sweetwater, was traveling on his motorcycle and collided with a pickup truck.

"The whole right side of his body took the impact," said Chelsea Barton, Nick's wife.

Leaving him with several broken bones and brain damage.

Barton had to be taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Chelsea has been by her husband's side at the hospital since the accident.

"These guys, they're not invincible," said Bret Baze, a friend of the family who is also hoping for a fast recovery for Nick.

"These guys put themselves in situations where they're usually the ones driving up on these accidents trying to help people and trying to save their lives. And in this situation the first responder ended up being the one that needed the help," said Baze.

A first responder with a wife and a 5-month-old baby.

"My mom is taking care of our son..and it's hard...knowing that I have to be here for my husband and I can't be a mom and a wife at the same time. And that's always what I wanted. It's tough not having my family together," Chelsea said.

And nick's journey to recovery still has a way to go..

According to Chelsea, doctors in Lubbock predict nick will still be at UMC anywhere from 13 to 15 weeks longer.

After which he will be moved to a facility in Colorado for extra rehab.

"They are there for us when we call for them. And there are times when they may need to be the ones calling and we may need to be the ones to step up," said Baze.

The Barton family is facing a number of visits to the hospital and rehab facilities in the future.

And with the family being on the verge of not having very little income, the family needs help.

A fund has been set up where people can donate money to help in Nick's medical expenses.

You can donate to this fund at www.helpnickbarton.com.

The family appreciates any help they can get.
