First Baptist Church Of Odessa Celebrates Christmas In Style

They had their grand opening as well as their Christmas celebration, which over 1,000 people attended.

ODESSA -- First Baptist Church of Odessa had more than one reason to celebrate on Friday.

They had their grand opening as well as their Christmas celebration, which over 1,000 people attended.

The weather outside was frightful, but the atmosphere at First Baptist's Christmas celebration was so delightful.

The sounds of Christmas filled the halls of the new worship center.

Pastor Byron McWilliams says the coincidence of the grand opening falling so close to Christmas and on the same day as their Christmas celebration was due to a higher power.

"We didn't do it on purpose," First Baptist senior pastor Byron McWilliams said.  "I think God did it on purpose because we were actually going to open two weeks ago and then the ice storm came and we couldn't get the different pieces that we needed.  And so tonight becomes the first night."

And then there was the performance itself.

"It's a celebration of Christmas, what Christmas is really about," Doug Chisum said.

Chisum says making the celebration a reality was no easy task.

"We've got a large number of people that are involved in this," Chisum said.  "Everything from angels and aerialists, and of course the singing group, the youth choir, and the adult choir of course.  I believe there are about 150 strong, something along that line."

Over 1,000 people braved the rain and made it to the grand opening to hear one message:

"Well I'd like to wish everybody in Odessa and the surrounding communities a very merry Christmas," Chisum said.
