ODESSA -- Children in the court system like CASA, Harmony Home and Child Protective Services, got to visit law enforcement in a different way on Sunday.

"It's really hard for them, their families are gone they've got families members in prison, they've got families members who have run," said Whitney Griffith, secretary of the Ector County Young Lawyers Association.

And to make the holidays special for them the ECYLA organized a free "Holiday with Heroes" festival.

"This is a great experience. It shows the kids that we're their friends..we're here to help them."

DPS Trooper Desirae Salcido says that the children in the court system are used to seeing law enforcement when something is wrong or when someone is in trouble..

And this is an opportunity to show them otherwise.

"We want kids to know that they can trust us and they can come to us at anytime, not to fear us," Salcido said.

Children were able to take part in a number of activities...From face painting to games and arts and crafts.

They even had a visit from Santa Claus.

Rebecca Arroyo says she appreciates the event and is glad her children have a way to make the holidays better.

"It's just nice to know they care about doing this for the kids in our community," said Arroyo.

And she says her children are most excited about the superheroes like Superman.

Griffith says with everything these children have been through, this gives them a sense of belonging to something.

And she says the ECYLA lawyers dressed as superheroes are a plus.

They wanted to bring in the hero aspect and actually have them walking around. The kids love it," Griffith said.
