Danvers Math Teacher Killed, No Bail for Student Suspect

DANVERS -- School will not resume at Danvers High School on Friday, where police say a freshman murdered a well-liked math teacher.

That 14-year-old could be charged as an adult, as he faces murder charges in the teacher's death. Students at Danvers High School, just outside of Boston, held a memorial for their teacher, whose body was found in the woods near the school on Wednesday. 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer, the Algebra and Geometry teacher others called caring and compassionate, described herself online as a "math teacher often too excited" about what she was teaching.

"There was no words to describe how upset and heartbroken everyone was from the loss of Miss Ritzer," says Brianna Wallis a student of Colleen Ritzer.

"She was so kind. She wouldn't hurt a soul. She was one of the nicest persons I've ever met, and she was just, like, a role model," says Paige Strauch a student of Colleen Ritzer.

Standing more than six-feet tall, the 14-year-old student now faces a murder charge. Police believe -- based on surveillance video and on their interview with Philip Chism, that he killed Ritzer and stashed her body in the woods near their school. The search for Chism brought police to this movie theater, where a source with knowledge of the investigation says the teenager watched a movie later that day after killing Ritzer. A year ago, Chism was playing soccer for a Middle School in Clarksville, Tennessee, where his former soccer coach called him the nicest kid on the team, "very respectful." "It was a complete shock, because it's completely out of character. It's not something that I would ever imagine Philip ever doing or anything like that," says Jando Herrera says the suspect's former coach. So why as Colleen Ritzer killed? Police still don't have a motive. News of Ritzer's murder comes days after the killing of another math teacher. In Sparks, Nevada -- near Reno -- Mike Landsberry was shot dead by a 12-year-old boy, who also shot and injured two of his classmates.
