Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees placed infielder Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list while finalizing their 25-man roster for Tuesday's season opener at Houston.

New York also designated infielder Eduardo Nunez, beaten out by rookie Yangervis Solarte for the Yankees' final bench spot, for assignment to create an opening for Solarte on the 40-man roster.

Ryan was limited to just four games and eight at-bats this spring by a pinched nerve in his upper back and will begin the season in extended spring training.

Nunez, who started 84 games for the Yankees last season and was the club's primary fill-in for the injured Derek Jeter at shortstop, had been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. The veteran utilityman is a career .267 hitter with 10 home runs and 76 RBI over 270 major league games, all with New York.

Solarte, signed to a minor league contract over the winter, made the Opening Day roster by hitting .429 with two homers, nine RBI and a .489 on-base percentage in 24 Grapefruit League games.
