ODESSA -- UTPB is hosting several town hall meetings to discuss its new UTBP STEM Academy.

Here are the details from UPTB:

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin has received approval to move forward with the creation of a charter school to be named the UTPB STEM Academy. The UTPB STEM Academy will open in August and is currently accepting applications for students.

UTPB will host a series of town hall meetings to provide parents with more information and an opportunity to ask questions about this innovative and individualized program. Please join us at:

6 p.m., Tuesday, April 22nd in the UTPB Library Lecture Hall, Room LL001
6 p.m., Thursday, April 24th in the Ector County Administration Building, 1010 E. 8th Street, Room 500, Odessa, TX
6 p.m., Tuesday, April 29th in the Woodson Park Community Center, 1010 E. Murphy, Odessa, TX
6 p.m., Thursday, May 1st in the Slater Park Community Center, 1001 W. 38th St, Odessa TX

What do you need to know about the UTPB STEM Academy?

- Classes will begin with K-6 and add one grade level each year.
- Open enrollment on the UTPB campus with 44 students per grade level.
- Project based learning with active engagement and learner-centered.
- Half day format.
- Opportunities to learn from UTPB STEM professors.
- Technology rich environments - an iPads will be provided for each student.
- Focus on hands-on, discovery/inquiry-based learning/research skill building.
- Special education services and other programs offered by traditional schools will be provided.
- Teachers will be certified and possess a Master's Degree or working toward a Master's degree.
- A Virtual Library with more than 5000 choices will be provided for each student.
- Virtual online curriculum lessons, learning videos and assessment tools will be used.
