USS George Washington Deployed for Philippines Aid

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the USS George Washington to the Philippines to help with recovery from Typhoon Haiyan.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the USS George Washington to the Philippines to help with recovery from Typhoon Haiyan.

The aircraft carrier, which is currently docked in Hong Kong, has five-thousand sailors and more than 80 aircraft on board. The crew is being recalled from shore leave and the ship is expected to leave later this evening.Hagel is sending other US Navy Ships to the Philippines as well. US Marines are already in the Philippines to help distribute the aid.

Officials are concerned the death toll could rise to 10,000 due to outbreaks of disease and a lack of food and water.
