Odessa, TX (Big 2 News) - It was about 2 a. m. Sunday morning when an off-duty DPS trooper was working at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Odessa.

"It's been pretty calm out here and to have something like that happen, it just made me uneasy about things," said Alex Burnett, who recently moved to Odessa.

According to Department of Public Safety officials, a blue pick-up was driving erratically nearly hitting parked cars.

DPS says as the truck stopped to pick up a passenger, the trooper walked up to the vehicle.

The driver refused to stop and hit the trooper twice with his truck.

"When we'd come to visit that's where we'd stay. We never encountered any problems when we were there," said Donna Johnson, who has been living in Odessa for several years now.

According to DPS, who say they're still investigating, the trooper fired twice.

But, the suspect got away.

"When you see something wrong going on you gotta let some people know, you know, so we can prevent these things you know, in this community."

Johnson moved to Odessa years ago but, she says she's noticed a big change in crime and violence these days.

"It's really sad to me that we have so much more violence around than we had when I was younger."

Burnett says it'll be a while till he returns to Oasis Bar and Grill, which is a part of the hotel.

"So, definitely gotta look out for skeptical people in those environments and that's I guess something that I gotta watch out for."
