The trial of a former Permian high teacher accused of having an improper relationship began Tuesday, after years of delay.

Robert Young, a math teacher, is accused of engaging in a relationship with an 18-year-old student in 2010. The student was not in any of Young’s classes.

Jury selection for the trial began Tuesday in Ector County. During the selection defense attorney Rick Navarrete and prosecutor Chris Fostel finished their voir dires before lunchtime. Six potential jurors said they knew Young and 11 said they had heard about his story on the news.

An anonymous tip to police led to Young's arrest, but he was later released on bond.

Young faces two counts of improper relationship with a student.
