SUV Crashes Into Apartment, Injures One Man

One man remains in the hospital after an SUV crashed into his Odessa apartment. The crash happened about noon Monday, at the Imperial Crest Apartments at 6501 Eastridge.
ODESSA, TX (Big 2 News) - One man remains in the hospital after an SUV crashed into his Odessa apartment. Meanwhile the driver of the SUV is in jail. The crash happened about noon Monday, at the Imperial Crest Apartments at 6501 Eastridge.

Neighbors who saw it all are still in disbelief.

"It's hard to believe something like this could happen,” said apartment resident Edward Washington.

"This is insane -- I've never seen this in my life,” exclaimed another resident.

"I don't really know what to think about it,” apartment resident Doug Brown stated.

The scare hit very close to home for Dylan McDorman. If the SUV would have hit 20 feet to the left, McDorman said it would have crashed into his home at Imperial Crest Apartments.

"It would have gone through the bedroom wall, right on top of the bed,” explained McDorman.

McDorman's wife was inside the apartment when the SUV slammed into their building.

“She said they only way she could describe how it sounded was like a bomb went off almost,” McDorman explained.

Other neighbors snapped pictures of the aftermath -- stunned the crash could have ever happened.

“Looking at the location of the apartment complex, you wouldn't expect anything like this to happen,” explained Washington. “So the guy had to be traveling at an extremely high rate of speed to come all the way across that field and come into the apartment complex that way."

“He never slowed down once, he never put on his breaks at all,” Brown added.

Police say John Daniel, 28, was behind the wheel of the SUV. Officers say Daniel was heading east on Highway 191 when he lost control of his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban and veered off the road.

“It's crazy man, somebody could go 500 yards and into an apartment building -- it's just kind of dumbfounding,” McDorman said.

Three people were inside the apartment the SUV hit. And police say one person: Michael Taylor, 49, was seriously hurt.

Taylor was taken to Medical Center Hospital. He’s listed in “fair condition” as of Monday night.

“He was the first person to introduce himself to me when I came into the apartment complex,” McDorman said.

McDorman described Taylor as a really nice guy.

“It really kind of sucks to see something like bad happen to a good guy like that, ” McDorman said.

“Poor fellow, I hope he's all right, I really do,” Brown added.

“It's scary to think that you can be in your apartment just watching TV and that people will come flying through -- it’s sad,” another apartment resident stated.

“It's a pretty sad situation. I guess you never know how it's going to come, right,” Washington said.

Odessa police say John Daniel is in jail. He's facing charges of aggravated assault.

Officers say they are still investigating the crash.
