WHAT IS APHASIA?

Aphasia is a baffling reduction in language, often following brain injury such as stroke. We help people with aphasia (and those who care about them) repair communication and hope.
Mission

The Aphasia Center of West Texas seeks to improve the quality of life of individuals and families living with aphasia by overcoming communication barriers.
Company Overview

Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person’s ability to speak, read, write or understand language, usually as a result of stroke or traumatic brain injury. It is estimated that over 2 million Americans have aphasia, and there are 200,000 new cases per year. Approximately one in every 250 people in West Texas has aphasia.

Over 70% of people with aphasia report that people avoided contact with them and 90 percent felt isolated and lonely. Those who live successfully with aphasia have access to educated professionals and friends plus adaptive environments to engage in life’s activities again.
