Search For ECISD Superintendent Yields Familiar Face

Board could name current Interim Superintendent and finalist for Tucson USD Superintendent Dr. H.T. Sanchez as their lone finalist
ODESSA -- The search for a new superintendent in Ector County ISD may be put on hold.

Monday night there was a rush of public support to name Interim Superintendent Dr. H.T. Sanchez to the position, but Dr. Sanchez has already been offered the same position in Tucson.

Community members and ECISD employees packed the board room Monday night to speak their minds about the search for a new superintendent.

In all, 13 people spoke to the board; 10 wanted to see Dr. Sanchez named the finalist for the superintendent job.

Several residents spoke about continuity and his openness with employees.

"It was amazing the relationship. We have never had a superintendent that was that open," former teacher Chuck Isner said.

After hearing the outpouring of support for Dr. Sanchez, who is currently the interim ECISD Superintendent, the board began discussing qualifications for their next superintendent but board member Nelson Minyard felt like Sanchez met most of that criteria.

"I think that we have a superintendent now who meets most of that criteria," Minyard said.

Minyard made a motion for another special meeting next Monday to name Dr. Sanchez the finalist for the job.

"I think that we need to have an up or down vote and give him the chance to make up his mind and which way he wants to go," Minyard continued.

A few people did advocate for a full search for a new superintendent.

"I believe that we owe it to our district, we owe it to our kids to look for the very best and we don't know what's the very best until we get the applicants," former ECISD Trustee Vicky Gomez said.

Others, still, felt like the district had taken too long in this decision process.

"This new board has been in place 6 weeks and has finally gotten to the point where they are initiating this conversation only after our interim superintendent has been hired by a new district," PTA President Malcolm Tyree said.

Tyree believes the board should survey all options.

"I would like to see a true search where somebody like H.T. Sanchez or others would be able to apply as candidates for that seach and the best candidate win," Tyree continued.

Monday night's meeting has tentatively been set for 6 pm on the campus of New Tech Odessa.

Even if the board does vote Dr. Sanchez as the sole finalist, it's unclear whether he will take the job since he does have the offer from Tucson Unified School District.

After next week's meeting, the board could  move forward with selecting a search committee if that's the direction they decide to go.
