Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox signed infielder Ryan Roberts on Monday, just one day after placing third baseman Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list with a strained calf.
Roberts, who spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, will be active Monday when the Red Sox host the Texas Rangers in the opener of a three-game series.
The 33-year-old veteran appeared in 60 games for the Rays in 2013 and batted .247 with five home runs and 17 runs batted in.
A career .245 hitter, Roberts has racked up 46 homers, 169 RBI and 35 stolen bases over parts of eight seasons with Toronto, Texas, Arizona and Tampa Bay.
To make room on the roster, the Red Sox optioned infielder Brock Holt to Triple-A Pawtucket and transferred pitcher Steven Wright from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Holt was recalled for Sunday's series finale against Milwaukee.
