New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust has received a two-game suspension for his hit that left New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan with a broken jaw.
The incident took place during the early stages in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday.
After playing the puck ahead off the boards, Stepan looked to join the rush but was drilled by Prust at the New York blue line. Prust drove his left shoulder into the chest and jaw of Stepan.
Inexplicably, no penalty was called on the play.
The league announced on Friday that Prust drew the ban for interference.
The Canadiens went on to win in overtime, but still the trail the best-of- seven series 2-1. Prust will be eligible to return if Montreal forces a sixth game.
Stepan is out indefinitely and reportedly has undergone surgery to repair his damaged jaw.
