Preparing for the Tall City Classic

Preparing for the Tall City Classic

Midland High and Midland Lee are preparing to square off on Friday night, and both head coaches know the impact this game will have on the District standings.
On one side you have the Midland Lee Rebels (5-1, 4-0), who are in a groove so far in 2013, and trying to forget last year's collapse when the Rebels failed to make the post season after losing the last game of the year.

On the other side you have Midland High (3-3, 2-2) who are coming off two consecutive blow out losses at the hands of San Angelo Central and Abilene Cooper.

With the Tall City Classic being played on Friday night, both of these teams would receive a boost with a victory. For Lee, it would improve their chances of securing a playoff spot and have them still undefeated in district play. For MHS, it would allow them to improve to 3-2 and potentially take over sole possession of fourth place depending on how Permian fares in San Angelo.

Both MHS head coach Craig Yenzer and Lee head coach James Morton know what this game means to their respective schools, and both know the ball can bounce either way come Friday night.

Morton said about the Bulldogs "You know the thing that hurt Abilene was the turnovers, they were hurting themselves. Well if you look at Midland High it's the same deal, same script. So it's very scary for me and our coaches to know that they've got things they can do to really hurt you with their athletic ability. Our kids understand that, and we've had a good week of work so we have to keep focused and get better in that area."

For MHS, Yenzer believes that his team needs to regain their confidence on offense, and that this game may be the perfect time for that to happen. Yenzer said "I think our guys are really going to get up for that situation and for that game on Friday night. I think that helps us. Obviously for this game you throw all of the records out usually anyway. It never ceases to amaze me the level of play of both programs, no matter who's up and who's down. I fully expect our players to give their best effort and I know Lee's players feel the same way so hopefully we do our part and it's a heck of a game."
