Doctors, nurses and EMT personnel from across West Texas got together in Midland this weekend to learn from medical experts about responding to emergencies.

The Permian Basin Health and Safety Conference was organized by the Texas JRAC, a Midland-based nonprofit organization and the Texas EMS Trauma & Acute Care Foundation.

The conference was organized to address the growing number of dangerous situations brought on by the boom, said Connie Thompson, the Executive Director of Texas JRAC.

“With the oil boom, you're having explosions, you're either having chemical burns, all kinds of traumatic burns, traumatic injuries,” she said. “So the focus is to have those people come out and tell us and share the different techniques.”

Experts from across the state spoke during the conference on a variety of topics including traumatic burns, chemical burns, West Blast and others.
