The Odessa College Fire Academy conducted its first approved live fire training this weekend.

It took place in the newly certified fire tower at the OC fire technology training center.

Students practiced getting their gear on quickly, breaking in the front door of the fire tower and trained in conditions that were made to simulate a real structure fire.

The new fire technology training center is located right next to a real fire station, which was a happy accident. But according to the programs director, being next to the pros gives the students something to look forward to.

"That is a good motivator for our students, because they can see themselves one day being that firefighter on that fire truck or being that paramedic on that ambulance,” said Bobby Valles, Director Fire/EMS, Fire Academy Coordinator.

The training only happened on the first floor of the three story tower, but trainers say that each session will open a new floor of the building to the cadets.

The next training session is set for March 29th.
