Members of the West Side Christian Church in Odessa were in shock after finding their church vandalized, with graffiti and flooded.

“Shock and surprise that someone's heart is that hard,” said church member Kathy Rhodes.

The church has an average of 35 members, many of them helped clean up the mess.

“That feces that was there,” Rhodes said. “They removed cords and took cords and connectors from our sound room and destroyed our sound room. Took our stereo and CD equipment.”

But there was more.

“Destroyed our computer equipment, spray painted the carpet,” Rhodes said.

The faucet in the baptism area was left open and the church was flooded.

It took investigators hours to document the damage before church members had to come in and do the cleaning.

“The entire hallway has little patch work placed where we had graffiti,” Rhodes said. “Various places on the doors, this room is kinda emptied out now it had graffiti all on the walls.”

The entire congregation is praying for the person responsible.

“Just tears come and it's not really crying but it's my heart that's overflowing with ache for that person and ache because our church was destroyed,” Rhodes said.

They held an outdoor service Sunday morning and remain hopeful for the future.

“The church is truly not the building,” Rhodes said. “They damaged the building and did things to god's house which is just a building god's house is in us.”
