Mother of Alex Brown Says Heart Breaks for Shallowater Teen's Family

Jeanne Brown says her heart breaks for the family of 16 year old Loran Coats, who died in a car accident in April.
Jeanne Brown says her heart breaks for the family of 16 year old Loran Coats, who died in a car accident in April.

"When you hear about a wreck like that, you just have flashbacks," Brown said.

According to DPS Troopers, a cell phone is a probable contributing factor in Coats death.  Coats was driving on April 16th, when she over-corrected, rolled her truck and was ejected.  Troopers say Coats was not wearing her seat belt.

"What happened to Loran was nearly exactly what happened to Alex," Brown said. "The same, driving the truck, not wearing their seat belt, rolled it, was ejected, I mean it just breaks my heart."

"You just don't get over losing your child, it still hurts," Brown said.

Alex was 16 at the time, and was driving her truck when it rolled and Alex was ejected.  She was texting at the time.

"How many people have to die, how many parents have to lose a child?" Brown said.

Brown says her heart goes out to the Coats family. "I feel you, and I'm so sorry you're going through this, and if there is anything we can do, even if it's just sit and cry together, or scream at somebody, I understand, but you'll get through this," Brown said.

The "Alex Brown Memorial Act" has passed the Texas House of Representatives, and is currently in committee in the Senate.  The last time a similar bill was passed, Governor Rick Perry vetoed it.
