REAL PIRATES: The Untold Story of the Whydah

The touring exhibition, organized by National Geographic and Premier Exhibitions, Inc., brings the classical age of 18th century piracy to life by showcasing over 150 artifacts recovered from the wreck site of the Whydah, the world’s first authenticated Pirate Ship that was discovered just off the coast of Cape Cod. The exhibition embarks visitors on a journey back in time to the life of a pirate with artifacts like jewelry, weaponry and treasure chests full of gold and coins.


Ropes Course and Zip Line

Challenge your agility, balance and strength as you encounter the five-tier Sky Trail® Ropes Course, the tallest steel ropes course on the Gulf Coast! Toddlers and small children can even take on an adventure of a smaller scale on the Sky Tykes™ Ropes Course that is appropriate for those who are 48” and under. Thrill seekers can now take adventure to a whole new level at the Moody Gardens Zip Line. Snap into your harness and step to the edge of the zip line platform and glide over Palm Beach and the Lazy River 50 ft. in the air for a bird’s eye view of the Moody Gardens Pyramids and tropical gardens.


Rio 4-D Experience

When the last blue macaws on Earth, Blu and Jewel, are captured by a gang of greedy bird smugglers, the unexpected duo must work together to embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling 4D journey through Rio de Janeiro.


Ridefilm Theater

Enjoy the final season of the Moody Gardens Ridefilm Theater. Strap yourself in as you dive, twist and turn and your seat mirrors every movement on a giant wrap-around screen with six-channel surround sound. The theater runs continuously from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For the safety of our guests we require that our riders be at least 42 inches tall. The Ridefilm Theater closes its doors on Aug. 12.

Working with TurningPoint Gulf Coast, Texas Adaptive Aquatics, Veterans Adventure and other local organizations, this free event allows participants to experience several water sports, including water skiing, sailing and Paralympic kayaking experience, with the assistance of special equipment and instructors. 13th Annual Festival of Lights

6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

As the largest holiday lighting events on the Gulf Coast, the Festival of Lights receives over 125,000 visitors, many of whom have made the festival their own holiday tradition. In addition to over 100 sound-enhanced animated light displays and nightly live entertainment, visitors can strap on a pair of skates and glide across the ice at the area’s only Outdoor Ice Skating Rink. Guests can slide into a thrilling experience with the 100-foot, Texas-sized Arctic Slide. Indoors, guests can take pictures with Santa or enjoy a variety of holiday-themed films at the MG3D Theater, Ridefilm Theater and 4D Special FX Theater. Admission to any Moody Gardens attractions is just $7 each with the purchase of a Festival ticket. Bring your own skates or skate rental is also available for just $7. Food Drive Fridays also offer 2 for 1 admission to the Festival for guests who bring a non-perishable food item. All food will be donated to the Galveston County and Houston Food Banks for needy families in the area this holiday season.

ICE

6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Moody Gardens presents ICE, a magnificent exhibit featuring approximately 20 large ice sculptures that will add a frosty new addition to the Festival of Lights in 2014. A skilled team of professional ice carvers will take 300-pound ice blocks and transform them into majestic displays ranging from holiday-themed sculptures to your favorite animals and cartoon characters. Chilled and held at a temperature of 9 degrees, you can witness these works of art as Galveston makes its holiday transition into a Winter Wonder Island.
