Midland Chamber of Commerce At Odds With Local Event Planning Companies

Local event planning companies accuse the Midland Chamber of unfair business practices, but now a compromise could be in the works.
MIDLAND, TX (Local Big 2 News) -- Local event planning companies accuse the Midland Chamber of unfair business practices, but tonight a compromise could be in the works.

Tables, chairs and items you need to plan an event.
For some, they're not a big deal but for others, like Catharine Nunn.

"It's a huge deal, yes, it's a huge deal," said Catharine Nunn owner of Bubbles Event Planning.

Nunn owns Bubbles Event Planning in Midland.

"We rent tables, chairs, linens, pretty much anthing you need for a party," said Nunn.

But Midland Chamber of Commerce recently decided to do the same thing and local party planning companies voiced concerns.

"We've talked to some city councilmen, we've talked to the Mayor, we've talked to other people that are in our industry," said Nunn.

The small businesses express fear about the competition.

"That is our business, we've put a lot of our savings into, myself and my business partner," said Nunn.

And their voices were heard.
The Chamber of Commerce held an open meeting for business owners last Thursday.

"We understand their concerns and that's why we wanted to make sure we address those business concerns," said Brad Barnett Vice President Of midland center.

So they came up with a compromise.

"The event rental companies in town will be able to rent our equipment and then pass that along to their clients," said Barnett.

Brad Barnett, the Vice President of the Midland Center tells me the new plan benefits both the city and the companies.

"This compromise is a win-win for us, it supports the local businesses, it gives them access to equipment that they don't have," said Barnett.

Nunn believes the Chamber wasn't familiar with her business or other local companies with party planning services until now.

"I think that the city, the Chamber was a little bit unaware of the different businesses that are out there that were already providing the need," said Nunn.

She told me she's excited to move forward and work with the Chamber.

"They're definitely promoting us, they're happy for us and we're going in the right direction," said Nunn.
