Midland, TX (Local Big 2 News) -The Midland Amateur Radio Club held their annual field day this weekend.

Members of the club practiced their emergency communication skills during a 24-hour exercise held nationwide.

Club members tell Local Big 2 it's important for them to practice these skills to help them operate quickly and operate more efficiently in the event of a disaster.

Amateur Radio Club Officials say weather is always unpredictable and they want to be prepared for any situation at any time.

"We wanna prove that we can pick up stuff immediately and get going somewhere and communicate and try and pass messages," said Steve Hopkins, president of the Midland Amateur Radio Club.

Hopkins says cell phone towers can't always be guaranteed in the event of disaster.

Hopkins adds radio communication can be the best tool for communicating distress or finding family members in the middle of a disaster.
