As of August 1st, Matthew Villanueva is Big 2 Sports newest reporter and weekend anchor, and he couldn’t be more elated to come back to West Texas and bring you today’s news in sports.
Born and raised in Austin for a lesser half of the decade, Matthew found a new home in San Antonio, and today considers both cities and everything in between his neck of the woods.
After graduating from Central Catholic High School, Matthew decided to attend Texas Tech University. Originally an Exercise and Sport Sciences major, he originally wanted to become part of general management or sports agent (thanks Jerry McGuire). His junior year, he would have a moment of clarity one stormy night (think Jerry Maguire’s mission statement scene) and realize he could take his undying passion for sports and combine it with his strengths in writing and communication. From there on, sports journalism it was.
It was during his time at Tech he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, as well as The Daily Toreador’s sports reporter/sports editorial columnist. He also made a couple of guest appearances on Tech’s student radio show – The Raider 88.1.
He would have two internships along the way that would help him tremendously learn the craft of broadcast journalism. The first was in Austin for CBS affiliate KEYE TV in news and afterwards was San Antonio’s NBC affiliate News 4 San Antonio.
Matthew can be quite the “homer” fan, but also appreciates excellence outside of Texas when he sees it. Among the teams he fancies: the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. But the team that has his heart most is the San Antonio Spurs, yet he probably won’t be wearing it on his sleeve so tightly after the 2013 NBA Finals…
When he isn’t inhaling sports, Matthew likes to kick back with his son – a chocolate Labrador named Mousse, enjoys a solid workout, and listening to good, diverse music. His favorite shows, to name a few excluding sports are: Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, How I Met Your Mother, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Parks and Recreation, Mad Men, and Saturday Night Live.
What Matthew cherishes most though is social media interaction and would love nothing more for you to follow him on Twitter @mattmvillanueva or like his Facebook page and tell him what’s on your mind – particularly about sports.
