A man arrested for intoxication is accused of assaulting a police officer after he was transported to jail, according to his affidavit.

Pedro Mata was arrested on February 16. When officers arrived to check on the call, Mata had a small cut above his left eye, police said. Mata said he fell, causing the small cut.

According to the officers, Mata’s intoxication did not allow them to get his full name and date of birth.

“Due to the fact he was extremely intoxicated and had fallen, officers believed that he was a danger to himself and others,” the affidavit said.

He was arrested and taken to Midland County Jail.

But when Mata arrived to jail and was going through his booking, he became “irrate and aggressive,” police said.

That’s when he hit an officer identified as Sgt. Nichols in the left thigh, according to authorities.

“Mata was then taken to the ground. While on the ground, Mata continued to resist,” the affidavit said.

Mata grabbed Sgt Nichols on the back of the left thigh. According to police, Mata was “causing pain” on the officer.

Mata was eventually placed into handcuffs and subdued. Mata was then charged with Assault on a Public Servant. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.
