New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Knicks guard Raymond Felton was in court Monday on a weapons charge and will apparently avoid jail time in a plea agreement.

Felton turned himself into authorities in February, hours after a game against the Dallas Mavericks, and was charged with felony possession of a firearm. New York has strict gun possession laws, which normally carry automatic jail sentences.

The deal from prosecutors would reduce the weapons charge and force Felton to serve 500 hours community service while paying a $5,000 fine.

Felton has an upcoming hearing later this month, at which time he is expected to enter a plea and will likely agree to the deal.

Reports in February had indicated that Felton's estranged wife and her attorney brought the gun to police.

There was speculation at the time that Felton had threatened his estranged wife with the weapon, but that was never firmly established.
