IRWA Helps Local Graduates Head to College

OHS track star and future Baylor Bear among dozens of scholarship recipients
Midland/Odessa --
Chapter 35 of the International Right Of Way Association helps out dozens of high school graduates year after year. This year they had 61 seniors apply for the Doug Damron Memorial Scholarship, 85 percent of which received one.

One application that seemed to stand out was that of Odessa High graduate De Kwaan Wynn. His story of defying the odds was nothing less than compelling.

"I live with my aunt, and my mom is in prison," said Wynn.

But he hasn't let that get him down. If anything, it's made Wynn work even harder, and that's exactly what caught the eyes and hearts of everyone at IRWA.

"Such a fine young man, it makes all of us at IRWA, Chapter 35 feel great." said Doc Weathers, University Lands senior geologist.

Great is exactly how Wynn felt after learning that he was receiving a $2,500 scholarship, especially under the current circumstances.

"Without scholarships, I (couldn't) afford to go to college. Baylor is a really expensive school," said Wynn.

And going to Baylor was non-negotiable. It's what he calls his dream school. "It's the only school that I ever thought about running track at, and the only law school I want to attend," he added.

But running college track will be put on hold until his sophomore year. The triple and long jumping star says he'll focus on his academics his freshman year, but he's not putting his track spikes away completely. "There's an olympic coach that wants to train me, so I'm going to spend my freshman year training with him and then from there get on the team my second year."

Wynn will be working at Cheddars until he leaves for school, but there's no question he's one step closer to living his dreams...something that may have never been possible without the help and generosity of organizations like IRWA. For that, Wynn is very grateful.

NOTE: High school seniors are encouraged to apply for the scholarship their second semester. If you would like to help give scholarships to people like De Kwaan Wynn, IRWA will be hosting a charity golf tournament to raise money for this year's seniors on September 27. The deadline to enter is September 13. For more information or to enter, visit or call Doc Weathers at 432-631-7646.
