ODESSA, TX (Big 2 News) -- TX-DOT has approved funding for the expansion of East Loop 338 in Odessa.

Here's the full release from TX-DOT:
AUSTIN — In an ongoing effort to improve safety and relieve congestion, the Texas Transportation Commission today approved $5.5 million for the expansion of Loop 338 on the northeast side of Odessa. Jones Brothers Dirt & Paving Contractors Inc. was awarded the project that will add two lanes to the existing highway between Yukon Road and Highway 385.

“Maintaining a safe transportation system is a top priority at TxDOT,” Texas Transportation Commission member Fred Underwood said. “This project, like many others across the state, is designed with safety and mobility in mind, while also striving to relieve congestion.”

The project will turn this section of Loop 338 into a divided four-lane roadway. The project stretches approximately 4.5 miles along the northeast loop between Yukon Road and Highway 385. There is no firm construction timeline set yet. Once construction begins later this year, the work will take about a year to complete. Most of the work will not directly affect traffic since the new roadbed will be built within the existing right of way with minimal impact on existing traffic.

Two other projects are also scheduled for the northeast section of Loop 338. A $3.1 million project is making improvements and adding traffic signals at loop 338 and North highway 385. A $360,000 project is adding traffic signals at East Yukon Road and Loop 338.
