Gardendale Park Is On Its Way Back To Life

Breathing life back into a community park, that's the goal of a group of Gardendale residents.
GARDENDALE, TX (Local Big 2 News) - Breathing life back into a community park, that's the goal of a group of Gardendale residents.

"It's something that I've grown up with all my life," said Gardendale resident Kevin Reed.

Kevin Reed holds a special place in his heart for Gardendale Park.

"It's the only park that Gardendale's ever had, se we've got to do something for it," said Reed.

But he sees a problem.

"A lot of people don't even know that our park actually exists," said Reed.

That's why Gardendale residents held a community meeting Thursday night to try and bring the park back to life.

"This parks been out here since Gardendale was out here," said Gardendale Community Association President Sharyn Carrigan.

Since 1959. Sharyn Carrigan, President of the Gardendale Community Association tells me their renovation plans.

"We're planning on putting in covered picnic areas and stuff like that, so that's going to put a little more color in the park," said Carrigan.

Carrigan says plans also include repair work, a fresh coat of paint, new playground equipment and walking trails.

"We're trying to bring our park back up to date the way it used to be," said Reed.

But before they move forward, they need funds to spruce up the park, so they're turning to local businesses.

"We're going to reach out to the companies that do business in Gardendale," said Carrigan.

And fundraisers.

"We're looking at doing a raffle," said Carrigan.

Carrigan told me she hopes others share her passion for the park.

"We want people to want to participate and take part in creating this park and making it better, building it," said Carrigan.

And Reed just wants to see children enjoy the park as much as did when he was a child.

"We'd love to see them come out and have barbecue's and just play on the playground equipment," said Reed.
