Fort Davis, TX (Big 2 News) - "Well the school was having financial issues with having a deficit and so, they were looking for places to make cuts in the program to keep the school afloat," said Darryl Schwierjohn, band director for Ft. Davis ISD.

According to Schwierjohn, the school board made the decision to cut band for 5th through 12th grade along with arts for 6th through 12th grade.

And he says this is just the beginning of more cuts being made to the district's programs.

"It was kind of depressing because I really enjoy band. I've been in it since I was in 5th grade and it's been a big part of my life," said Rafael Riegeo, a band student at Ft. Davis High School.

One band student says he doesn't understand why they would cut band.

"Some of the other activities cost more but serve less people. but, for our band, it serves a lot of people but cost less," Louis Riegeo, a band student at Ft. Davis High school.

Schwierjohn says he's surprised the school chose to cut band as the program has been majorly succesful and has grown each year.

"The band has had a great year this year. We made our first won in marching band in 20 years, this year, division one. this year, we've had more kids participate into an ensemble contest and make the region band," Schwierjohn said.

In addition, Schwierjohn says the change will cost him his job.

"I'll not have a job here next year, I'll have to find one," said Schwierjohn.

And students say the change makes them want to switch schools next year.

"All the budget cuts, they're taking out a lot of things. We're probably gonna move," Louis said.
