Odessa, TX (Local Big 2 News) - Members of the Rose Sharon Baptist Church in Odessa are left to worship elsewhere Sunday.

"We do what we need to do. Clean up the debris and do ministry," said Donald Flinn, pastor of the church.

A Friday night fire destroyed the church, city officials say it was declared a total loss.

Flinn tells me he believes the cause of the fire may be electrical.

"We'll keep praying, keep believing, keep trusting, until we see our vision become a reality in rebuilding," Flinn said.

According to Andrea Goodson, public information officer for the City of Odessa, fire crews were battling the flames for about six hours.

City officials add they had to call the Midland Fire Department to help with service calls unrelated to the church fire.

The building has since been deemed unsafe.

"We don't wants kids or adults or anybody being curious and going inside the building and getting hurt. The most important thing is to stay out of the building," said Goodson said.

Members of the church gathered in front of the building to see the damage left behind.

"It's a natural thing for us to come together with what we say we believe and express that by showing that kind of care and concern for each other right now," Flinn said.

"It is a loss you know and we hate it to see it in loss of any building and especially one of a house of god," said Odell Crawford, president and CEO of the Black Chamber of the Commerce of the Permian Basin

Crawford says it's a heartbreak that hits close to home for many in the community.

"People are coming up and they aren't even members and they're showing you know, how devastated they are," Crawford. said.
