Ector County Sheriff's Officials Investigate Explosion

A small explosion sends a 13-year old to the hospital and there are multiple theories floating around as to what this explosive device actually is.
ODESSA, TX (Local Big 2 News) -- A small explosion sends a 13-year old to the hospital and Ector County Sheriff Officials continue to investigate the case. Multiple theories are floating around as to what this explosive device actually is.

"The bang was so loud and so scary," said resident Sandra Vega.

Sandra Vega lives right across the street from a water well. This is where police told me a little black device was found by a 13-year-old boy, and then exploded.

"My brother saw the little boy running from the water well where it happened, and they also saw the smoke," said Vega.

Officers intially thought the device was something called a flashbang, used by law enforcement to disorient someone.

"It explodes, causes a little cuncussion, confusion amongst the person," said Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.

But now, Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson tells me they can't quite pin point what it is.

"We're just trying to figure out where this came from and what reason it would have been for being out there," said Donaldson.

And there are quite a few theories.

"It's not like any flashbang we've ever seen, it could be somebody made it."

Something Vega is bothered by.

"There's some kids here that are three to four and five years old, and it's just scary, it's scary," said Vega.

And longtime residents like Tony Davis worry about his own backyard.

"It kind of worries about me, something like that could wind up in my yard," said Davis.

As for Vega, she hopes scenes like this stay far away from her house.

"I hope it never happens again," said Vega.
