Ector County Medical Examiner's Office Under Fire

The Medical Examiner's Office is under intense scrutiny after the District Attorney ordered the bodies of an Odessa couple to be exhumed.

Odessa, TX (Big 2 News) - "I feel like he's picking on the Medical Examiner's Office," said Medical Examiner Anne Acreman.

"That's ridiculous, I'm not targeting them, I'm pointing out the mistakes they've made," said District Attorney Bobby Bland.

Mistakes. A word Chief Medical Examiner Anne Acreman doesn't like to use.

"I don't see that these are mistakes, these judgements were not made in a snap decision at the time," said Acreman.

"They've made mistakes and they won't acknowledge them," said Bland.

The Ector County Medical Examiner's Office is in hot water after District Attorney Bobby Bland ordered the bodies of an elderly Odessa couple to be exhumed.

"They made a quick decision not to do an autopsy in this case, and it's caused problems for the victims children," said Bland.

This isn't the first time the Medical Examiner's Office made the news.

A similar situation occurred back in February when an autopsy wasn't performed after a premature baby died.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the opportunity to exhume the body as a result of cremation, but that's not the case for Paula Sanchez and Ruben Gandara.

And that's why Bland wants an autopsy report.

"They make excuses for what they're doing, and it disrupts people's lives," said Bland.

If the Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy at the time of death, it would have been around six thousand dollars. Now that more time has passed, the county has to spend a total of twenty thousand dollars.

"Looking back, and knowing now that this was multiple DWI charges for the gentlman they have in custody, if we had known that at the time the decision might have been different," said Acreman.

Acreman doesn't believe that any real substance will emerge from these autopsy reports.

"It's extraordinarily unlikely that any thing is going to come out of these autopsies except that the individuals both died as a result of blunt force trauma as a result of a wreck," said Acreman.
