Ector County Budget Meeting Brings Hope for Sheriff's Deputies

Pay raises for Sheriff's deputies. That's just one of the things included in next year's proposed Ector County budget.
ODESSA, TX ( Local Big 2 News) -- Pay raises for Sheriff's deputies. That's just one of the things included in next year's proposed Ector County budget, and the commissioners began delving into the numbers Monday.

Binders, laptops and mechanical pencils. No, it's not the first day of school but rather a budget meeting.

"We're looking at increases for everyone, for all the departments," said Ector County Commissioner Freddie Gardner.

And one department seems to suffer more than most.

"He's in dire need of more deputies and trying to keep the deputies that we have," said Gardner.

Ector County Commissioner Freddie Gardner says hopefully the pay raises are an incentive, and the proposed budget for Sheriff's deputies.

"At least gives us a fighting chance," said Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.

A chance to be a bit more compatible with the Odessa Police Department.

"When the pay difference in a starting salary is $13,000 between us and the police department," said Donaldson.

That's why Sheriff Mark Donaldson came prepared to the meeting.

"We've got some pages that I'll present to them with signatures from the public, saying they support the raises for the Sheriff's deputies," said Donaldson.

But Judge Susan Redford acknowledges a key difference.

"We will never be able to pay what the city pays because we don't receive sales tax revenue like they do, we at least need to be competitive which was what my goal was whenever I proposed this budget," said Redford.

Redford suggests a five percent increase for deputies and maintenance level positions.

"Law enforcement provides a critical function for us," said Redford.

And Commissioner Gardner believes a positive outcome lays ahead.

"I think that after we finish that we'll be happy with the Sheriff's budget and the Sheriff will be happy with it also," said Gardner.
