Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs activated utilityman Emilio Bonifacio from the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

To make room on the roster, the Cubs designated infielder Darwin Barney for assignment and optioned left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup to Triple-A.

Hendricks will be the starting pitcher and Bonifacio will be available for the Cubs' series opener against the San Diego Padres Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

Bonifacio returns to the Cubs after being on the disabled list with a right oblique strain since June 13. He is batting .261 with 16 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 61 games this season.

Hendricks joins the Cubs for the second time this season after making his big league debut July 10 at Cincinnati, when he recorded a no decision in Chicago's 6-4 win.

The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in six innings, striking out seven.

Barney batted just .230 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 72 games for the Cubs this season, while Rosscup had no record and a 7.50 ERA in seven relief appearances.
