She leads district 2-5A in goals scored, yet she’s only a sophomore.
Sam Vestal is a big reason why the Permian Lady Panthers are undefeated in district.
“You know I don’t think we’ve had a freshman come in for the first two years and have this kind of an impact," said Permian Lady Panthers head coach Chad Peterson.
Being the District Newcomer of the year last season has led to Vestal being leaned on heavily this season, especially in scoring.
“Just being the young one and having all your seniors like be ready for you to go out on the field," said Vestal. "Every game they tell me like 'Sam you gotta score.'”
Every match, she’s bringing it.
“She has that extra gear that she likes to go to," said Peterson. "She has no fear of taking on somebody bigger than her, faster than her, older than her.”
Her motivation on the pitch? A loved one she dedicates every game for
“I basically do everything for grandma because she passed away two years ago," said Vestal, "and I do everything for her now just because she was always here for me.”
And with two years left, there are no ceilings for Sam Vestal.
“The sky is the limit for her," said Peterson. "We can see her going to a quality D-1 program, maybe something else. Who knows? Olympic development programs, the national team programs… they’re not out of the realm of possibility.”
