Austin Shirley, Navy veteran, came up with the idea and began the journey in Florida with his dog, Archer. He decided to call it “Chasing the Sun 2013.”

“I got this idea like man I want to walk from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean,” Shirley said.

He began researching the walk and realized that not many people had embarked on this journey, especially with a dog.

“I count really find anybody that had done this route in this time of year with a Husky so I was ready to rock and roll,” Shirley said. “I have never been more excited about anything in my life.”

While on the journey, Shirley met up with his friend Bryan Cochran, also a Navy veteran.

Cochran decided to join him, and now the three have walked more than 1,500 miles.

“It’s been an adventure so far,” Cochran said. “I’ve never done anything like this with my life.”

The goal is to raise $50,000. On Friday, they had received almost $20,000.

“I always want to give back to my brothers and sisters I have a deep, deep place in my heart for all of them so I wanted to do a little more,” Shirley said.

They will take a rest in Odessa on Saturday and continue walking on Sunday.

“I've been on the road for over four months now and every state line is a really good feeling because you know you're one step closer,” Shirley said.

The journey has not been easy, as they have experienced bad weather, blisters and sleeping in a small tent.

But the two men say the hardships are all worth it.

“This will be a story for my family for generations to come,” Cochran said.

They will end their trip in San Diego, Calif. this summer and the three will be taking a couple days off.

“This was really just a step of faith,” Shirley said. “I just wanted to take this as a chance in my life to give back a little bit.”
