Benefits of Vitamins

ODESSA -- There have been numerous reports on the benefits of vitamins and supplements, questioning if they are needed.
ODESSA -- There have been numerous reports on the benefits of vitamins and supplements, questioning if they are needed.

"For a majority of the population in the county who are reasonably healthy, who eat a reasonably balanced meal, vitamin supplementation has no benefit," said Medical Doctor Lawrence Voesack from Medical Center Hospital.

According to Dr. Voesack, vitamins have no real effect on the general public.

But taking vitamins is part of many people's daily routine.

"I take biotin to help my hair grow."

"Especially in the cold season, I take a lot of vitamins. Just so I don't get sick. I gotta work a lot so, I can't afford to miss work," said Gerald Cook.

But Dr. Voesack says no matter how many vitamins you take.

"If you take vitamins and your body cannot use it at that time because we don't store vitamins except for B-12, the vitamins will go down the toilet," Dr. Voesack said.

Once you take them, you should be able to feel something or feel different in a couple of days or whatever. I don't get that feeling," said Aron Tutt.

Voesack says there is a small group of the population who can actually benefit from taking vitamins.

Such as pregnant women, anyone who has had stomach or intestine surgery, those who have rare intestinal problems like Crohn's disease or irritable bowel disease.

"As people get older, their stomach and intestines change. Their ability to absorb nutrients from their diet decreases. so, in those populations, there's a possibility that vitamin supplementation may help," Dr. Voesack said.

"So, maybe that's why I don't get any effect once I take them. Because I haven't had any surgeries, in pretty good health," Tutt said.

And while there are so many options when it comes to vitamins, Dr. Voesack says it doesn't matter.

"There's things that are organic, there are things that are for older people, there are vitamins that are for younger people, there are vitamins that have mineral supplementation. No one is better than another."
