"A Not Too Distant Tomorrow" - Theme for 2014 MLK Basin Event

The Midland Celebration will include a day of festivities
MIDLAND -- "A Not Too Distant Tomorrow" is the theme for this year's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration; it's also a phrase from Dr. King's famous letter from Birmingham Jail. The Negro Business and Professional Women's Club of Midland hopes everyone in the community will come out and participate.

The Midland Celebration will include a day of festivities beginning with a MLK Day of Service activity from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, which will be a book drive to benefit the elementary school in the city of West Texas that experienced the fertilizer plant explosion in April, 2013. New or gently used books with hard or soft cover, fiction or non-fiction and appropriate for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade are needed. This is being sponsored by the Texas Senior Corps Assoc. which represents more than 50 Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion and RSVP Projects throughout the state of Texas. There will be food and entertainment while supporting a very good cause.

That evening local artists, singers, dancers and speakers will take the stage; including the MLK Community Youth Choir. Poetry presented by contestants from our Poetry Slam and a skit featuring youth in our community.

The Negro Business and Professional Women's Club of Midland says, "it's all about coming together which is what the legacy and memory of Dr. King is all about. We encourage everyone to join us for the celebration. There is something for everyone".
