MIDLAND -- A murder took place in New Mexico 27 years ago and after new leads surfaced earlier this year, authorities were able to track down the accused murderer, Ramon Ramirez and put him behind bars. Midlanders were surprised an accused murderer had been working just feet away from their homes.
“How is a murderer going to be right down the street and we don’t know about it,” said Midlander, EJ Terrazas.
Just feet away from EJ Terrazas’ house, Ramone Ramirez worked and was arrested.
“How is the store he was working at not going to do a safe background check,” said Terrazas.
It was an arrest 27 years in the making,,,
“It was just kind of creepy, that he was caught around here and that he worked for many years around here so it kind of puts you on edge a little bit,” said Terrazas.
Julie Costilla tells me you can never can be too cautious.
“You don’t ever necessarily know who you live next to, you know your friends and your family as much as you can, but I don’t know the people across the street from me as necessarily as much as I should,” said Midlander, Julie Costilla.
The arrest of Ramon Ramirez brought up more questions than answers for Costilla.
“How did he get through the cracks, how did he hide for so long,” said Costilla.
After Gloria Ruiz found out Ramirez was an accused murderer she told me it makes her wonder.
“It makes me feel nervous because you never know what can happen, if there’s one, there might be others,” said Midlander, Gloria Ruiz.
Now in this neighborhood there seems to be a sense of relief that Ramirez is behind bars.
“I am just glad there is closure in the family and I am glad justice was served,” said Terrazas.
According to police Ramirez admitted to the crime after he was arrested. He faces multiple charges including first degree murder and He will be extradited back to New Mexico.
