CARLSBAD -- Sheriff Scott London reports that on January 9 at approximately 3:45 pm the Eddy County Sheriff’s Deputies identified, encountered and attempted to conduct a high risk traffic stop on a mobile stolen vehicle which they located on Standpipe road. The driver later identified as Odes Goins initially complied with the stop. However, while deputies were attempting to communicate with him he disengaged and took off at a high rate of speed leading the deputies in a pursuit that lasted approximately 5 minutes. During the pursuit he demonstrated a total disregard for the safety of the public or even his own welfare. He eventually drove into the Irrigation Canal in an attempt to elude officers but was not able to exit the canal so he abandoned the vehicle fleeing on foot in the area of 600 of North 1st street. During the foot pursuit, Mr. Goins was observed to have barricaded himself in an RV. It appeared that he may have armed himself while fleeing on foot so the Carlsbad Tactical Response Team was called in to remove him from the RV. They arrived and a short time later they were able to extract him without incident. He complained of suffering serious injuries and was taken to Carlsbad Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Charges are pending on Mr. Goins. It was later learned that he walked away from the Hospital against medical advice.
Officers that inspected the vehicle discovered a 5 year old female child in the back seat who was later determined to be Goins Daughter. She was suffering of minor injuries believed to be as a result of the fleeing by Mr. Goins. She was transported to Carlsbad Medical Center for treatment and eventually handed over to the custody of Children Youth and Families Department. The Investigations Continues.
