ODESSA, TX, (Local Big 2 News) - Federal agents and local officers busted an elaborate meth ring Thursday morning. Twenty nine people sit behind bars, accused of selling the drugs here in the Permian Basin. Authorities also seized more than 11 pounds of meth in the bust.

"Today the citizens in the Odessa area are safer," says U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent Will Glaspy.

Citizens are safer tonight thanks to a string of arrests in connection with a drug ring selling meth in Odessa.

"Agents were able to identify 32 people in the Odessa area, who were involved in this distribution ring," continued Glaspy.

Authorities say Shawn Niece of Odessa lead the meth ring, and that criminals shipped the meth into Odessa right alongside the rest of people's mail.

"One of the methods they were using was Fedex, UPS, and transportation or shipping companies to mail their methanphetomine to the Odessa area," explained Glaspy.

According to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson, it took a team effort between multiple law enforcement groups to take down the drug ring.

"This is the only chance we have to stem the tides of drugs that are coming into the Permian Basin," Donaldson said.

However, Donaldson believes the wealth of the Permian Basin makes the area a target for drug dealers.

"People know there's money here that people are making money, so they want those people to spend their money on their drugs," says Donaldson.

As a result, the drugs may not be gone for good.

"Now is it going to build back up? It's a very good possibility, but that's what we're here for," explains Donaldson.

Thursday's drug bust caused Murry Fly Elementary students and teachers to shelter-in-place for half an hour, creating concern and confusion for one parent.

"Well, we didn't really know what was going on, we just got the phone call, and then hung up, so we tried calling back to the school," says Mr. Ramirez.

But Ramirez says he felt re-assured once he got in touch with school officials.

"They said everything would be OK so we just took them on their word," explained Ramirez.
