Parents and Students Speak In Favor Of JV Cheer Squad At ECISD School Board Meeting

Odessa , Texas (Big 2 News) - "Skipping a whole year, that would also decrease my chances of getting into a better college," Courtnie Swafford said.
Odessa , Texas (Big 2 News) - "Skipping a whole year, that would also decrease my chances of getting into a better college," Courtnie Swafford said.

It's a problem Courtnie doesn't want to face.

And her mom is petitioning the Ector County Independent School District school broad to make changes to include sophomores in the Permian High cheerleading program.

"They're the only sport that does not have a JV team and we're wanting to change that," said Jodie Swafford, Courtnie's mother.

Courtnie is a freshman and cheerleader at Bonham Junior High.

But next year as a sophomore at Permian High, she won't be able to try out for the Permian High cheer squad as a 10th grader.

"So, they're gonna basically gonna have a whole year off. And that's what we're trying to avoid," Jodie said.

According to ECISD officials, any revisions made to Permian's cheer constitution must be approved by the school board.

Tuesday's special meeting brought a show of strong support from both parents and school board members themselves.

But ECISD board members say the timing is off.

"It gave the administration an opportunity to take a look and an opportunity to look at the policy and look at what's been asked from students and being asked of from parents," said
Ray Baety, president of the ECISD school board.

Board members say this is a change that would need be thought out carefully as it will affect several current and incoming students.

"If they're going to advertise breaking tradition, they need to follow through with that," Courtnie said.

ECISD Superintendent, Tom Crowe agreed with Courtnie's statement saying, traditions are meant to be broken and changed.
