Open Carry Gathering In Big Spring

The Open Carry Movement rallies here in West Texas. It's illegal to carry a handgun outside your own property and the group Open Carry Texas wants to change that.
BIG SPRING, TX (Local Big 2 News) – The Open Carry movement rallies here in West Texas. As it stands, you can legally carry a shotgun or rifle in a non-threatening or alarming manner in Texas, but it's illegal to visibly carry a handgun outside your own property. The group Open Carry Texas wants to change that.

"Texas is one of only six states that does not allow the open carry of handguns,” said Open Carry Texas President CJ Grisham.

CJ Grisham wants to change that.

"We’re supposed to be a state that is based on a very proud tradition of gun rights, and yet, we're not a very gun friendly state,” said Grisham.

As the President of Open Carry Texas, he believes the state needs to step up.

"Our state has fallen way behind in gun rights,” said Grisham.

That’s why the group organized a get together for Open Carry Texas supporters.

"It depends upon us, the American citizen to stand up for our right to bear arms,” said Open Carry supporter Sandy Smith.

"This country was born because of our second Amendment rights,” said Grisham.

Open Carry supporters like David Smith think those rights are being taken away.

"We need to exercise our second Amendment rights to show that we have people trying to take that away from us,” said Smith.

Grisham tells me he simply doesn't understand why other states have the freedoms he feels his state should also have.

"As a Texan, I'm a little embarrassed by the fact that I can't openly carry a pistol, but in every state that borders our state you can,” said Grisham.

In the meantime, he plans to fight to the finish.

"We're not going anywhere, we're going to continue to fight for Texas rights, gun rights until we get constitutional carry,” said Grisham.
