Midland, TX (Local Big 2 News) - September 6th will be a day to honor the fallen from 9/11.

The Midland Fire Department will be participating in in the Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb for the first time.

"When you're climbing you're gonna be thinking of those firefighters that lost their life there in 9/11 so, I'm just proud to be able to go," said Drew Peters, a battalion chief for MFD.

343 firefighters will be climbing 110 floors.

Midland fire officials say each fire fighter will be assigned a fallen fighter from 9-11, wearing a tag with their name and picture.

Odessa Fire Captain Jason Cotton says this will be Odessa's fourth year being in the event.

"You're climbing the stairs, you're thinking about all that, you know how tough it is," said Jason Cotton, fire captain for the Odessa Fire Department.

Tough, with their gear adding an extra 40 to 60 pounds.

"And I can tell you, it takes practice," said Jeff Thon with MFD.

"It's tough, it's tough going 110 flights straight up," Cotton said.

Midland fire officials say to be doing the stair climb together, to represent the Permian Basin, means a lot.

"We have been doing a lot more things together and this is one way that we get to know our brothers in Odessa better and I'm just proud to be able to go with them," Peters said.
